800 years on a courtyard wall.
The white-on-earth mural lesson with Sita is three hours of slow, careful work. Geeta-didi corrected my line work patiently. I took home a piece of the courtyard.

Women's craft, women's room.
Six women in a courtyard, learning a ritual the Tharu women have painted for 800 years. Sita's grandmother joined us on day two. Quiet, transformative.

I bought the export-line dhurri after.
After the class I walked to the Tharu Craft Collective shop and bought one of the natural-dye dhurris. Full circle. The collective's export line to Tokyo is launching — invest if you can.

My daughter's favourite hour in Nepal.
My 9-year-old daughter painted alongside Sita's daughter Anjali for three hours. They didn't share a language but did share a wall. Best photo of the trip.
