The 4am bell is the gift.
Three nights in silence. The 4am bell, then zazen with the sangha as the sky turns pale. Bhante Thich Truc's chanting hall was the stillest room I have ever sat in.

Coming home without leaving.
Vietnamese monastery in the heart of Lumbini — eating in noble silence, the Heart Sutra at dawn. The roof leaks (fund the repair!) but the spirit does not.

Plain room, profound week.
Single bed, wooden floor, one shelf, one thin blanket. Three meals in silence. By the third day my mind had nowhere to hide. Bhante's dharma talk on Sunday was unforgettable.

Real practice, real cold.
February nights are cold here — the guest wing has no heating. Bring thermals. The practice schedule is real, not performative. I left changed.

Bhante Truc's kindness is its own teaching.
I missed the 4am bell on day one and was mortified. Bhante just smiled and said, 'tomorrow.' The whole stay was that, gently.

Walking distance to the eternal flame.
1.2 km to the flame — I walked there at sunrise after meditation each morning. The monastery's morning porridge is plain and exactly right.

Questions guests have asked
Q.Do I need to be Buddhist to stay? Can I skip the 4am bell?
A.All faiths welcome. The 4am bell rings — you don't have to come to the hall. But most guests find that after 2-3 days, they want to. The morning sit is gentle.
— Bhante Thich Truc · Park M. from Korea
Q.Are meals strictly silent or can guests speak among themselves?
A.Breakfast and lunch are in noble silence. Dinner is light, optional, and we permit conversation in the courtyard. You may also speak with me at any time — I am available 4-5pm daily.
— Bhante Thich Truc · Sarah W. from USA
Q.How cold is the guest wing in February? Should I bring sleeping bag?
A.Nights drop to 6-8°C. We give two thick blankets but no heating. A sleeping bag liner is a good idea. Wear thermals to bed. Daytime is mild.
— Bhante Thich Truc · Hiroshi S. from Japan
Q.Tôi có thể đóng góp lao động thay vì tiền không? Can I contribute labour instead of money?
A.Có thể. Yes — we accept work-stays for serious practitioners staying 7+ nights. Garden work, kitchen, library cataloguing. Please email with your background first.
